"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work."
- Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931)
Welcome to G1ANS.CO.UK
Thanks for stopping by.
I've been a Radio Amateur since the early 1980's (although been interested for longer
than that). I decided to take the RAE after seeing the radio station at The Science
Museum (GB2SM). My interest is Data Transmission ie RTTY and Packet and all the Meteo
signals around the HF bands.
As keen subscriber to "Practical Wireless" and "Wireless World" I was the original
"project building fiend". I built a Top Band transmitter and power supply, Heathkit
Grid Dip meter / Valve Voltmeter, a Sweep Oscillator and many other things. After
getting a Yaesu FRG7700 and BBC Micro my interest in Data Modes was kindled. I used
to visit the Sandown Park BARTG Rally but that's no more. Frequent trips to Tottenham
Court Road in London resulted. Sadly Heathkit, Z & I Aero Services, Proops, Laskys,
Lindair, and Smiths have all gone. Even Henry's has moved from Edgware Road. A visit
to London was not complete without TCR, Edgware Road and Lisle Street. These were
the "Mecca" for all electronics enthusiasts. If it weren't for Maplin Electronics
we'd be stuck now although they don't seem to sell components any more, only gadgets
and toys at high prices.
Maplin also seem to have fallen by the wayside (Feb 2018) - oh well, there's always
RS and Farnell.
